The exhibition runs until Aug. 15<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition, which runs until Aug. 15 at Taman Ismail Marzuki cultural center in Central Jakarta, was also organized to acknowledge the contributions of renowned<em> pencak silat <\/em>artist O\u2019ong Maryono.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis exhibition shows various interpretations of<em> pencak silat<\/em> as a culture that has been explored and reinterpreted by the sculptors,\u201d the exhibition\u2019s initiator, Dolorosa Sinaga, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe diversity of styles in<em> pencak silat<\/em> represents Indonesia\u2019s cultural diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dolorosa said the idea to organize the exhibition crossed her mind after she was asked by the wife of O\u2019ong, Rosalia Sciortino Sumaryono, to make a<em> pencak silat<\/em> sculpture for the O\u2019ong Maryono <em>Pencak Silat<\/em> Award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then I thought it would be better if we organized a collaborative exhibition so the message to preserve <em>pencak silat<\/em> could be better conveyed to the public,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 607px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image image-img_assist_custom-512x338 \" title=\"I Want to be Jago by Muhammad Jundi Al Furqon\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/files\/images2\/21iwant.img_assist_custom-512x338.jpg\" alt=\"I Want to be Jago by Muhammad Jundi Al Furqon\" width=\"597\" height=\"395\" border=\"0\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">I Want to be Jago by Muhammad Jundi Al Furqon<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\"><\/div>\n<p>Dolorosa soon found that<em> pencak silat <\/em>and sculptures were somewhat connected.<\/p>\n<p>She said that<em> pencak silat <\/em>was considered art as it featured dynamic movements, shapes, colors and, most importantly, emotion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudging from those aspects, I think <em>pencak silat<\/em> is very artistic and I want to show that side of <em>pencak silat <\/em>to people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019ong Maryono is a master teacher and <em>pencak silat<\/em> scholar who won many national and international <em>pencak silat <\/em>competitions. He was the world champion of <em>pencak silat<\/em> in the free class in 1982 and 1984, and won first prize in the same category at the Southeast Asia Games XIV in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>He founded his own <em>pencak silat<\/em> school, KPS Nusantara, published a book on the socio-cultural aspects of <em>pencak silat<\/em> and its historical development and was involved in many <em>pencak silat<\/em> federations in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019ong died in Singapore in 2013 after losing his fight against cancer.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, O\u2019ong\u2019s family and friends set up the O\u2019ong Maryono<em> Pencak Silat<\/em> Award, a program that gives grants to finance research activities, documentaries and publications on <em>pencak silat<\/em>, in honor of O\u2019ong\u2019s contributions to preserving <em>pencak silat.<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 437px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image image-img_assist_custom-341x511 \" title=\"Tarian Silat 2 (Silat dance) by Dolorosa Sinaga\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/files\/images2\/21tariasilat.img_assist_custom-341x511.jpg\" alt=\"Tarian Silat 2 (Silat dance) by Dolorosa Sinaga\" width=\"427\" height=\"642\" border=\"0\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tarian Silat 2 (Silat dance) by Dolorosa Sinaga<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\"><\/div>\n<p>Rosalia said the exhibition also gave<em> pencak silat<\/em> the chance to shine as an art form.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPencak silat<\/em> is often combined with traditional dances, but we rarely see it in other art forms, like in sculptures,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Most works at the exhibition are presented in statues and statuettes, made of ceramic, wood, copper, fiberglass and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>pencak silat<\/em> artist, Ilham Rohadi, lends his skills to creating statuettes out of movements in <em>pencak silat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes you can\u2019t really see movement in <em>pencak silat<\/em> as it moves fast, but through sculptures, people can examine the poses better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his sculptures are stand-alone figurines holding weapons, another one features two figures battling.<\/p>\n<p>He decided to participate in the exhibition to reminisce about the time he spent with O\u2019ong in Bondowoso, East Java.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO\u2019ong used to be my teacher and when I heard about this exhibition, I wanted to participate because I respect O\u2019ong and I want <em>pencak silat<\/em> to be better known by people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Another artist, Taufan AP, said that he had made three sculptures for the exhibition.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"image image-_original \" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/files\/images2\/21silats.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" border=\"0\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of his works, entitled Terperangkap (Trapped), showcases a red figurine of a pencak silat artist trapped inside a box, symbolizing systems or trends in society.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p>His other works in the exhibition are inspired by Betawi culture, including a palang pintu tradition sculpture made of paper.\u201cMany people today know karate, or muay thai better than<em> pencak silat.<\/em> My work represents how<em> pencak silat<\/em> is not as well known as those forms of martial arts,\u201d Taufan said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Photos by JP\/Don<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sorry, this entry is only available in Inggris (A.s.).
